2017 is the 90th anniversary of Swanston Golf Club and our Seniors and Ladies sections recently held a “cross country” event to mark this occasion.
A great turnout, which included guests, friends the Club Captain and the Brasserie Manager
Fiona Shepherd has kindly put together the following report.
Report from the Ladies Captain
SWANSTON 90 was held on Tuesday 18th July 2017.
A great day had by all. Fourteen teams of members plus a few guests, 56 golfers in total, turned out to play in this Cross Country Texas Scramble competition on a beautiful summer’s day, organised to celebrate 90 years of Swanston Golf Club.
I apologise for not speaking at the Swanston 90 Prizegiving but I do find that size of gathering quite intimidating and my voice simply would not carry to the back of the room. So now, on behalf of everyone who took part, I wish to say “thank you” to Stewart Kerr who really was the driving force behind the event – it was his idea and he did all the hard work of organising the teams, etc.
The special Swanston 90 marker makes a great memento. Also, very many thanks to all of you who came out to play and support Swanston 90.
Miss Carswell, who put Swanston Golf Course on the map in 1927 and set up Swanston Golf Club (for ladies only at first) must have been a very determined woman to have achieved so much in that day and age – and I am certain she would be very happy to know the pleasure we all get from playing golf at Swanston 90 years later.
The £112 raised for charities from the entry fees has been split 50/50 for Marie Curie, the Seniors chosen charity, and Maggie’s Centres, the Ladies’ chosen charity.
Swanston Ladies are very grateful to everyone who supported the Raffle.
We raised the amazing sum of £196 for our Planting Scheme, with an additional very generous £100 raised from the auction of a 4-ball voucher for Dunbar GC kindly donated by Janette Maine (a guest playing in the competition). Now we have an excellent sum to add to that already raised at earlier events.
Volunteers are still required to complete the first stage of weeding, etc!
The winning team – Andy Dunlop, Grant Colligan, Des Fields and Bill Craig – were each presented with a bottle of wine by Club Captain, Graeme Millar. Sponsored prizes were also awarded for achievement at each hole.
A vote of thanks was made to our hardworking greenkeepers who keep the course in great shape.
As always, we are grateful for assistance from the boys in the Shop; and thanks to the Bar staff for serving out drinks with a smile. Also, thanks go to the SNGC Board for donating £90 which covered the cost of the 90 ball markers, the wine for the winning team – and the balloons!
I think Swanston 90 reflected the best of being a member at Swanston – camaraderie, a bit of fun but a challenge at the same time, being competitive but not taking golf too seriously, raising funds for another cause.
Here’s to reaching Swanston 100!
