EX MEMBER JOHN JOHNSTON

I received an E-mail on Sunday from Scott Johnston to advise me that his father John Johnston has sadly passed away

Scott wrote “Mike – My father John passed away suddenly last Thursday, he was A Life member at Swanston as he had been a member over 50 years, he has not played in the last few years so I don’t think you will have met him.
The years of carrying his clubs up the old 12th and 13th finally took their toll and he had heart bypass, knee replacement and hip replacement which ended his golf career.
He was 86 and I think he first started playing at Swanston when he was 16, he used to get the tram from Leith Walk with his father to Oxgangs and walk to the club.

Unfortunately I never had the pleasure of meeting John however the Club Captain, Graeme Millar remembers John well and fondly and replied to Scott.

“I have just heard from Mike Robson about your Dad and I was very sorry to hear your sad news.
I played your Dad twice in the Club Championship and he was always the perfect gentlemen on the course.
I am sure he was off about six at that time.
Showing my age a bit but I also played with your grandad a few times.
You were all committed Swanston members.
Please pass on our condolences to all the family Scott and we will mention your Dad on the Swanston web site if you are okay with us to do so”
